Biography

Poppy Lee Friar is a London born artist, actress and filmmaker whose paintings primarily explore landscape through colour. 

Working in oils, she creates vibrant and contemporary paintings inspired by the British countryside and coastline in changing states of natural light. Friar spent time learning colour theory from renowned British artist Alex Brown at Court Robert, Monmouthshire, but is primarily self-taught.

“Oil paint allows me to build surfaces, layering colour and gesture with both brush and palette knife until the painting arrives at something beyond direct observation. Each painting has a unique story and an approach that I feel best portrays it. Rather than documenting a place, I seek to evoke the joy of having been there. Herefordshire and Wales will always have a special place in my heart due to their mythical beauty and openhearted people. It is where I feel truly at home - a feeling I hope emanates from my art.”

Poppy has also created several documentaries for fellow artists surrounding their practices and art theories.
