It begins with landscape but is ultimately concerned with light, colour and memory.
I am drawn to moments that exist briefly: changing weather, reflections across water, distant hills illuminated by a passing break in cloud. The moments that affirm our presence.
Working in oils allows me to build surfaces, layering colour and gesture until the painting arrives at something beyond direct observation. Each painting has a unique story and an approach that I feel best portrays it. Rather than documenting a place, I seek to evoke the feeling of having been there.
In addition to landscape work, I enjoy creating loose, free and expressionistic images, including portraits, live sketches and abstracts.
Biography
Poppy Lee Friar is a British artist whose work explores landscape through colour, atmosphere and memory.
Working primarily in oils, she creates vibrant and contemporary paintings inspired by the British countryside, coastline and changing light. Friar spent time learning colour theory from renowned British artist Alex Brown at Court Robert in Raglan, but is primarily self-taught.
Her paintings are held in private collections in the United Kingdom.
